NewsTribune news staff honored with five awards in AP competition





The NewsTribune won five awards in the 2013 Illinois Associated Press Editor’s Association’s editorial contest.
The NewsTribune newsroom took first place in the category of Best Web Site.
On behalf of the news staff, media editor Amy Flanery accepted the award Thursday evening during a ceremony in Springfield.
Staff coverage of the Westclox fire earned second place in the Breaking News category.
Sports writer Jared Bell won second place in the Sports Feature category for his story titled “Mendota’s Near back after serious car accident,” which featured Mendota senior Karly Near who overcame injuries sustained in a car accident to return to the basketball court last season.
Bell, a La Salle resident, is a 2004 Princeton High School graduate and a 2008 Northern Illinois University alumnus. He started working for the NewsTribune in January 2005 and has been a full-time sports writer since July 2010.
Reporter Kevin Caufield won second place in the Investigative Reporting category for his series titled “Gorging Public Tax Dollars” which revealed questionable spending practices within local township governments.
Caufield has worked at the NewsTribune since 2003. He lives in Peru with his wife Alison.
Sports reporter Chris Yucus won second place in the Sports Column category.
Yucus, the son of a sand farmer in rural, Ohio, graduated from Ohio High School in 1998 and received his bachelor’s degree in English from Northern Illinois University in 2006.
A five-year veteran of the sports-writing profession, Yucus joined the award-winning NewsTribune sports staff full-time in September 2011.
The NewsTribune competes with all Illinois Associated Press member newspapers with a circulation between 15,000 and 40,000.
