Recent damage to Oglesby’s McPhedran Park will not prevent its official grand opening celebration May 18.

Oglesby parks director Bob Ghighi said any repair work done to the park will be put on hold for the possibility of Federal Emergency Management Agency financial assistance. Before financial assistance can be given, FEMA officials would first need to assess actual damage.

“I’m not sure when we’ll get it fixed because we’re waiting to see if FEMA will address it,” Ghighi said.

Heavy rains last month caused park drains to become filled with silt and most noticeably washed out a portion of the track, which is severely lopsided.

However, city work crews have nearly finished installing all of the park’s amenities, and the park is open to the public, Ghighi said.

“We’re just about done installing everything, it’s just that now we need to fix the damage,” he said.
