La Salle man treated for gunshot wound to leg

A 32-year-old La Salle man was hospitalized for a gunshot wound to his leg early Saturday after what police are calling an accidental shooting in a car.

Police believe John D. Vulcani of 1588 Bucklin St., La Salle accidentally fired a 9 mm bullet into his leg and drove himself to St. Margaret’s Hospital, Spring Valley, where he was admitted for treatment, Peru police chief Doug Bernabei said.

“Preliminarily we believe this was an accidental shooting and we do believe that alcohol is a factor in this incident,” Bernabei said.

At 3:45 a.m. Saturday Peru officers responded to a disturbance in the 1800 block of State Street and saw several people in their 20s and early 30s. These people told police they were walking home from a bar and decided to have a party at an apartment on Main Street when Vulcani, who had been at a bar with them, drove up in vehicle to join them, Bernabei said.

A person from the group got into the vehicle with Vulcani. The two told the group they were going to a different location and drove away. When the vehicle was about a half-block away the group heard what sounded like a gunshot. The vehicle stopped and the passenger got out. The passenger said that Vulcani showed him a 9 mm handgun and accidentally fired a bullet into his leg. Vulcani drove himself to St. Margaret’s Hospital, Bernabei said.

Spring Valley and Peru police responded to the hospital and located a 9 mm handgun in the vehicle. The incident is under investigation, Bernabei said.
