New trash service began today in Peru

NT Staff

Today in Peru, Illinois Valley Waste Services began collecting garbage and recyclables. There are no changes to the trash and recycling program, but here are reminders issued by the city and hauler:

Garbage and recyclables must be at the curb by 6 a.m. on day of pick-up. (The same goes for Spring Valley and La Salle, according to Illinois Valley Waste Services).

Illinois Valley Waste Services will pick up one garbage can containing not more than 50 pounds. It also will pick up one bulk item (couch, chair, mattress, etc.) weekly with regular garbage. No appliances, electronics, TVs, computers, building materials or hazardous waste is allowed.

Additional garbage bags will be picked up with a city of Peru sticker. Stickers are $1.50 and can be purchased at the city clerk’s office, Hy-Vee, Illinois Valley Food  & Deli and Debo Ace Hardware. Stickers must be attached to a removable garbage bag, not to a garbage can or container lid.

Recycling pickup is every other week on garbage day.
The city sent out fliers to residents in utility bills last month alerting of a change in waste hauler.

Any questions or missed pick-ups may be directed to Illinois Valley Waste Services, (815) 875-2293, or the city clerk’s office at (815) 223-0061.

Why would Peru change garbage haulers? Sure they say less money, but maybe a shady deal under the table that they will regret in the future. MW should have reviewed the bids with his first hand knowledge in La Salle. As far as I'm concerned the former haulers did a perfect job.

Keep the faith Kathy. Your waste will be picked up as you will see that this new waste hauler has only one rule, there are no rules.
The city will tell you there are but this contracter just laughs at them and does what it wants.
Garbage will hit the streets and yards will be litttered as the wind blows waste from the top loaders. People will put five or six and moce cans out with no stickers and they will be picked up,
Yard waste takes on a whole new meaning now as you will see, so be patient as there are no rules.

The new trash pick up didn't work very well. It is 7:00 p.m. and my trash is still sitting on the curb waiting. The trash was on the curb last night along with all my neighbors. We live on the corner of Plum and Center streets. Did someone change our pick up day and fail to tell us?
