La Salle County Democrats rally at La Salle

Alicia LeGrand-Riniker
NewsTribune Reporter

During the La Salle County Democratic Central Committee’s annual Jackson Day Dinner fundraiser on Saturday at Celebrations 150 in La Salle, state Sen. Mike Frerichs from the 52nd District was a last-minute replacement for U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) who canceled after being invited.

Frerichs was called a “raising star” by state Rep. Frank Mautino (D-Spring Valley) and added that he would like to see Frerichs run for state treasurer. Frerichs is on the Agriculture and Conservation, Energy and Financial Institutions committees and a supporter of renewable energy bills including building turbines throughout the state. Frerichs said he likes turbines because they provided clean energy, create jobs, and provide funding for schools.

In Frerichs’ speech, he said he became a Democrat because the party helped him, his family and his community. He also said no one got where they were today on their own but rather owe it to the people who fought for their rights in the past; he said Democrats have a responsibility to protect the future generation.

The Young Democrats assisted with the event by helping with check-in and selling raffle tickets for White Sox tickets that were given away at the end of the night.

Rocky Raikes, the La Salle County Democratic Central Committee Chairman, said the Young Democrats have been working hard to campaign for the 1 percent La Salle County Schools Sales Tax increase referendum. He also announced that Herman “Bones” Brun from Streator was La Salle County Democrat of the Year.

Raikes also said Durbin apologized for not coming tonight and hopes to attend another function. Raikes said that might be a picnic in July.
