CASA seeks volunteers to help children

NT Staff

La Salle County Court Appointed Special Advocates will host an orientation and class for dedicated community persons interested in advocating for the rights and best interests of children who have been neglected and abused.

The orientation and first class will be 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19. To complete the required 30-hour National CASA training, subsequent classes will be 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21 and continue Tuesday, Feb. 26, and Thursday, Feb. 28, with the last class on Saturday, March 2.

Classes are in the basement of LaSalle County Government Center, 707 E. Etna Road, Ottawa.

Classes are designed for adult learners and will include, in part, online assignments and independent readings, as well class time with area expert guest speakers. Topics will include the history of child welfare development, investigative and court protocols, child development, family strengths and dynamics, trauma in children, mental health, family violence, substance abuse, cultural competencies, and proper court reporting format.

Advanced registration is required. Candidates must meet the following requirements: Be 21 years of age, complete an application with three non-relative references, pass an FBI and Illinois State Police fingerprinted criminal background check, clear DCFS tracking for abuse and neglect, attend class and complete the 30 hour specialized training, have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation, and commit to court assignment to advocate for a child for 18 months or until case closure.  Upon successful completion of requirements, candidates are then commissioned by a La Salle County juvenile court judge as “friend of the court” and a child advocate or CASA.

Please join CASA and give the gift of self and time to a child in need. Call (815) 434-2620, or email iam4thechildmcr@gmail.com to register.
