City of Ottawa buys Central School, riverfront land

NT Staff

OTTAWA — The city of Ottawa on Monday completed the purchase of nearly 16½ acres of Illinois Riverfront from the Ottawa Elementary School District 141 for the price of $375,000 at the legal offices of Myers Berry O’Conor & Kuzma, Ottawa, according to a press release.

The more complex transaction of purchasing the former Central School building with the assistance of a grant of federal Hurricane IKE Flood Recovery funds administered by the state of Illinois occurred last week. Although the school purchase price was limited to just $1 because of the large amount of Federal Emergency Management Agency funds already received by the OES, the entire grant award was for nearly $2 million and will be used to demolish the flood-prone former school building later this year.

“Today’s transaction clears the way for the more than 16 acres of riverfront to be included in the comprehensive planning process the city will soon be undertaking with the assistance of a $100,000 award of IKE Recovery funds,” Mayor Robert Eschbach said. “This will be a very open and public process which will give all Ottawa citizens an opportunity to share their opinions about the future of Ottawa.”
