MENDOTA — After months of speculation and years of searching, members of the board of directors of the Mendota Area YMCA announced a fundraiser for the purchase of the former B&M Motorsports building on Route 251 south of Mendota.
The building is expected to offer space for cardiovascular equipment, free weights, Nautilus-style equipment and a dance/yoga/group activity room. Becky McPheeters, member of the board, said no single member wanted to speak about the building prospects since they believe this is a community effort.
The board will swing into full fundraising mode following the announcement, with a goal of $250,000 for renovations to the building that will convert it into a functioning YMCA.
Mendota Area YMCA is affiliated with the Illinois Valley YMCA, and the Mendota building will be a joint effort.
Pledge cards for donations are available at Mendota Area Chamber of Commerce and cash contributions can be made at First State Bank.
