A three-car accident that resulted in five injuries and three people refusing treatment Saturday afternoon on northbound Route 251 just south of 38th Street was in no way connected to a reconfigured traffic pattern for 38thStreet andVenture Drive.
At 2:51 p.m. Saturday, a vehicle carrying two passengers and driven by Kyle Thompson of Cherry was stopped three cars back from the intersection and facing a red light in the right lane of northbound 251, and a car carrying three passengers and driven by Gary Donovan, 51, of 5673 Vienna Drive, Rockford was stopped behind the Thompson car. According to Peru police, Laurie L. Shipp, 45, of 22269 1200 E. St., Walnut did not remember what she had been doing while northbound on 251 but looked up to see the cars stopped and red light when her station wagon struck and crushed the trunk of Donovan’s car, which then struck Thompson’s auto as the light was turning from red to green.
Shipp was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, Peru police said.
Multiple ambulances responded, as well as tow trucks from Fulmer’s and Scholle’s of Peru.
The following were treated and released at Illinois Valley Community Hospital,Peru: Bennett J. Thompson, 10, of Cherry; and Gary Donovan and passengers Irene Donovan, 79, of Mendota, Edward Donovan, 75, of Mendota and Donna Donovan, 52, ofRockford.
