This Thursday is the 37thGreat American Smokeout, an annual nationwide day of encouragement of smokers to either go cold turkey for a day or to launch their own efforts to quit smoking.
“Next to Thanksgiving, it’s the most famous Thursday in November,” Leslie Dougherty of La Salle County Health Department said Tuesday.
American Cancer Society sponsors the Great American Smokeout the third Thursday each November.
The health department encourages everyone to join in on the campaign against smoking, “which is the most preventable cause of death in the United States today.”
The health department also can help smokers who reach out for help in quitting.
“We do encourage people to call the Illinois Tobacco Quitline, because we can give out nicotine replacement therapy,” Dougherty said.
For information on how to quit smoking or for nicotine replacement therapy, call the Quitline at (866) 784-8937.
