UPDATE: Peru woman dies after van-bike crash

NT Staff

Darla J. Lindenmier, 51, of Peru died at 11:39 p.m. Tuesday in St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria County coroner Johnna Ingersoll said this morning. There was no preliminary cause of death; an autopsy was scheduled today.

Lindenmier was fatally injured while riding what police described as a combination pedal- and electric-powered bicycle at 4:13 p.m. in the 3000 block of North Peoria Street, Peru. There, a southbound van driven by Janette K. Langan, 39, of 3208 W. Kent Drive, Carbondale struck Lindenmier’s southbound bicycle, Peru police said.

Langan was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, Peru police said.

“There are no indications that any reckless or impaired driving on the part of Langan took place,” Peru police chief Doug Bernabei said. “Neither she nor her five passengers (husband and children) were injured.”

Bernabei further noted the cyclist (subsequently identified as Lindenmier) was thrown from the bike and struck the van’s windshield. She did not appear to have been wearing a helmet, Bernabei said.

“Part of the ongoing investigation will focus on attempting to determine what mode the bike was in at the time of the accident,” Bernabei said.

Lindenmier was taken by ambulance to Illinois Valley Community Hospital and flown to Peoria. La Salle County Sheriff’s Office and state police are assisting with the investigation. Responding agencies included Peru police and firefighters, Peru Volunteer Ambulance Service and Peru ESDA.

So the driver kills a bicyclist and gets only a failure to reduce speed ticket? Sounds like more vehicular manslaughter to me.
