An elderly Oglesby man is dead and his wife in critical condition today following a shooting Tuesday that remains under investigation. Donald Herrick, 79, of 319 N. School Ave. is dead from an “apparent self-inflicted gunshot,” La Salle County coroner Jody Bernard said shortly before press time today. Herrick’s wife, Catherine, also of 319 N. School Ave. was a patient in critical condition in St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria, a hospital spokeswoman confirmed this morning. Additional details were not immediately available and there was no explanation for how Catherine Herrick was injured. A press release from the coroner’s office and Oglesby police pledged for morning submission was not issued by press time. Authorities were directed Tuesday afternoon to the 300 block of North School Avenue, where a crime scene technician, three prosecutors, two coroners and several police officers were in attendance. The scene was not taped off, however, and authorities stressed that no one was in custody.
