NT Staff

La Salle County unemployment increased to 11.9 percent this March from 11.5 percent in March 2012, according to Illinois Department of Employment Security data released Thursday.

IDES reported the Ottawa-Streator area unemployment stood at 11.5 percent last month, compared with 11.2 percent in March 2012). Thursday’s numbers mark an improvement from unemployment of about 13 percent two months ago, but IDES makes comparisons only of months from the current year to the same month in the previous year.

Bureau County unemployment worsened to 10.3 percent last month, compared to 10.1 percent last March.

Marshall County unemployment also worsened by two-tenths of a percent to 8.9 percent. Putnam County’s March unemployment was 11.9 percent this year and 12 percent last year, according to Thursday’s IDES report.

March local unemployment rates increased in seven of 12 metropolitan areas in Illinois, including Peoria (from 8 percent last March to 8.9 percent last month), according to IDES.

The statewide March 2013 not-seasonally-adjusted rate was 9.4 percent, compared to 12.2 percent at its peak in this economic cycle in January 2010.
