St. Bede WYSE team competes at state today

St. Bede varsity Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering team is participating today in the state finals in Champaign.

The WYSE team earned the berth in the finals after placing first at the regional competition and then last month at the sectional competition at Illinois Community College in East Peoria.

WYSE, which is offered to high schools statewide, is sponsored by the University of Illinois.

Students compete in two written exams among the following subjects: biology, chemistry, computer science, graphic engineering, English, math, and physics.
The 14-member varsity team consisted of Grant Bosnich, Sam Brolley, Marcus Cirone, Brandon Criss, Joe Jagiella, Kendall Kolodziej, Eric Li, Sam Lucas, Jake Postula, Christopher Sampson, Lydia Stariha, Claudia Szczepaniak, Keira Zhuang, and Brendan Zimmerman. They are coached by Brother Luke McLachlan, O.S.B.

Sectional individual award winners were Grant Bosnich, first place in physics; Eric Li who double medaled with a first place in chemistry and a third place in physics; Sam Lucas also double medaled with a third place in both English and physics; Joe Jagiella won third place in chemistry; Keira Zhuang again finished second place in mathematics.

Marcus Cirone won third place in computer science.
