A mother and daughter were taken into custody on felony heroin charges following a controlled buy conducted Thursday in La Salle, the Tri-County Drug Enforcement Narcotics Team (TRI-DENT) said in a press release issued Friday.
Gwen L. Kovolis-Pennington, 35, and Roberta J. Campbell, 53, both of 1818 Fourth St., Apt. 4, Peru both were charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance (heroin) with intent to deliver following a buy-bust operation in the 800 block of Joliet Street, La Salle, TRI-DENT said.
Police said the women delivered less than a gram of heroin to a person working with TRI-DENT. After being taken into custody, Pennington was found in possession of an additional 2.8 grams.
TRI-DENT also reported that a juvenile (subsequently identified as a 6-year-old) was with Pennington at the time. The child was taken into protective custody, police said.
The possession charge is a Class 1 felony carrying 4-15 years in prison. Bond was set at $1 million. Each needs to post $100,000 in cash to be released from La Salle County Jail.
