Libraries' Food for Fines program returns for holidays

NT Staff

Seven area libraries (La Salle, Peru, Richard A. Mautino in Spring Valley, Putnam County — Hennepin, Granville, McNabb, Standard, Putnam, and Magnolia, Graves-Hume in Mendota and Oglesby) are sponsoring a joint “Food for Fines” amnesty program to benefit area food pantries.

From Dec. 3 through 15, the libraries will accept canned or boxed nonperishable food donations for payment of overdue fines. Each donated food item pays $1 in library overdue fines up to a maximum of 25 items to pay $25 per overdue library/patron card. Food items must be presented to the circulation desks, with all donated food given to area food pantries (Illinois Valley and Putnam County Food Pantries, Mendota Area Christian Food Pantry and Hall Township Food Pantry).

Donated food is not accepted for lost or damaged books, replacement of cards or interlibrary loan fees. Because of food safety concerns, the pantries request items be in their original packaging, and damaged packages, outdated food or glass containers are not acceptable. Suggested food items include canned vegetables, fruits, soups, boxed stuffing mix, cereals, pasta mixes and canned meats.
