By Wednesday afternoon, Project Santa volunteers already had filled 5,170 Christmas stockings and were on their way to stuffing 7,000.
Project Santa is a local effort to send care packages to U.S. troops serving overseas during the holiday season. In recent weeks the group collected donations of money and care package items. This week is dedicated to stuffing the stockings and preparing them for shipping.
Organizer Heidi Milner said 85 people had volunteered for the cause in just one day.
Milner said further donations still would be accepted at the Catholic War Veterans hall in La Salle. The most appreciated gift at this time would be money because of the high cost of shipping. Last year Project Santa spent $16,000 in order to send more than 7,700 stockings overseas.
For more information or to help, contact Milner at sidsheidi@yahoo.com or at the IVAR store. Project Santa also can be found on Facebook and at www.projectsanta.net.
