CVS Pharmacy to 're-stylize' at busy intersection

CVS Pharmacy plans to build and open a new pharmacy in October at the Jewel shopping center in Peru and demolish the old Jewel store.

This news came Monday from Bob Vickrey, community development director for Peru, at a city council meeting.

CVS bought the entire parcel and its first step will be to build a new pharmacy. It will break ground this spring and have a new store open by October, Vickrey said.

The current CVS pharmacy is attached to the east side of Jewel. The new pharmacy will be on the far northwest corner of the parcel on what had been the Jewel grocery store parking lot. Jewel, owned by Supervalu, closed in March 2012.

CVS filed a development application with the city. It eventually plans to demolish the Jewel store and redevelop the parcel, which stretches south to 10th Street, Vickrey said.
“You’ll see the entire center re-stylized,” he said.

The new pharmacy will be about 13,200 square feet. It will sit close to the intersection of Shooting Park Road and Route 251, directly facing another large chain pharmacy, Walgreens.

Some shoppers this morning said they looked forward to the changes.

“I think it will be great,” said Pat McCollum of Oglesby, who was on her way into CVS. “But I hope you don’t have to walk so far back to get to the pharmacy.”

Gwen Walsh of Peru also stopped by Tuesday morning and said she shops there three to four times a month.

She asked more questions about the development, and when she learned the old Jewel grocery store would be demolished, she said: “I miss Jewel.”

The parcel is profiled in an online brochure and investment offering by CBRE, a global real estate service. It calls the site Shooting Park Plaza and lists an asking price of $2,575,000. The owner is not identified, but Vickrey said he believes it is locally owned.

CVS/pharmacy is the retail division of CVS Caremark Corp, headquartered in Woonsocket, R.I., which has more than 7,600 CVS/pharmacy and Longs Drug stores in the U.S., according to PR Newswire.
