Feds give $100,000 for boat septic pump-out at Spring Valley

NT Staff

Illinois Department of Natural Resources plans to construct boat septic tank pump-outs at Spring Valley Boat Club and additional sites in the state using a $100,000 grant from the Clean Vessel Act program of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Other sites will be identified later this year, according to a press release from the Fish and Wildlife Service.

The grant also will fund education and information about the benefits of the Clean Vessel Act. A total of $16.6 million in grants will be awarded to 21 states under the program. In the Midwest, Indiana received $362,140, Michigan received $200,000 and Missouri received $50,000.

The funding promotes and assists recreational boaters with disposing of on-board septic waste to allow public uses like fishing and drinking.

Since the first Clean Vessel Act awards in 1993, the Service has awarded more than $200 million to states. Funds are provided from the Sport Fish Restoration and Boating Trust Fund, maintained by fishing tackle manufacturer excise taxes and boat and fishing import duties, as well as motorboat and small engine fuel taxes.
