Templeton running for fifth term as sheriff

NT Staff

La Salle County sheriff Tom Templeton this week announced his intention to seek a fifth term as La Salle County Sheriff.

At his announcement, Templeton said, “It has been both an honor and a privilege to serve the citizens of La Salle County.”

First elected in 1998, Templeton ran after serving for 25 years as a deputy sheriff. He started as a patrol deputy in 1973 and rose to the rank of captain prior to his election as sheriff. He has served in all facets of the sheriff’s office, including patrol, corrections and investigations.

During his tenure as a deputy sheriff, he has graduated from the FBI National Academy as well as the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development School. After his election he graduated from the National Sheriff’s Institute and Illinois Sheriff’s Management Institute.

Since 1998, under his leadership, the sheriff’s office has moved into a new jail complex, implemented the Offender Watch Program, which allows citizens the ability to locate and track sex offenders in La Salle County, and sits as the vice chairman of the Child Advocacy Center and currently is 2nd Vice President of Illinois Sheriff’s Association.

Templeton teaches in the law enforcement program at Illinois Valley Community College and is an instructor in the part-time officer and full-time service officer’s training program for the Illinois Law Enforcement Training Board. Also, he is a member of Criminal Justice Program Advisory Council at IVCC.

He has been married to his wife Cheryl for 36 years. They have two children.
