Raymond L. Smith, 87, of Oglesby died at 1:21 p.m. Nov. 13, 2012, in Heritage Health of Peru surrounded by family.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Shields Funeral Chapel, Oglesby, with an 11 a.m. Mass in Holy Family Church, Oglesby. The Rev. Gary Blake will officiate. Burial will be at St. Vincent’s Cemetery, La Salle.
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday in the funeral chapel. The rosary will be recited at 4:45 p.m.
Mr. Smith was born Dec. 21, 1924, in Toluca to Robert and Margaret (Brassea) Smith. He married Dolores Urban on Sept. 3, 1949, in St. Valentine’s Church, Peru.
He was a lieutenant in the Illinois State Police, District 17, retiring in 1984. He was a member of Holy Family Church where he was an usher for many years and Holy Name Society. He also was a longtime trustee of Oglesby Elks where he became a member in 1958. He enjoyed playing pool every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon with his friends at the Elks.
Survivors are his wife of Oglesby; three sons, Raymond (Jane) Smith of Lawson, Mo., Rod (Janice) Smith of Oglesby and Randy (Cindy) Smith of Cary; eight grandchildren, Jennifer, Julie, Marc, Kathy, Cara, Tricia, Kurtis and Ashley; and six great-grandchildren, Zac, Paige, Dalton, Brayden, Dylan and Landon.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, Oliver, Robert, Charles, James and LeRoy.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Illinois Valley Community Hospital Hospice or Holy Family Church.
