OTTAWA — IVCC golf coach Jim Lukosus knew early he wanted Ottawa’s Baley Lehr to be an Eagle.
On Thursday, he landed the Pirate standout.
Lehr signed with IVCC in a ceremony at Ottawa Township High School with Lukosus, his parents Brian and Melissa and Ottawa coach Dave Wultzen in attendance.
“I’m real excited about this,” Lukosus said. “Our program had our eye on Baley since the beginning of the fall when he started his senior year. He put up some good numbers, so he was one who was on our radar. We’re very happy to land him. We think he’s going to be a good fit for IVCC, and it gives an opportunity to his parents to be close and watch him participate. It all should work out well.”
Lehr chose IVCC over the University of St. Francis.
“It’s close and affordable,” Lehr said about why he chose IVCC. “I like the golf course (Senica’s Oak Ridge) and I know a couple players on the team, so that will be good.”
Lukosus said he expects the two-time NewsTribune First-Team All-Area selection should be able to contribute to the Eagles immediately, while Wultzen said Lehr can get even better.
“When he came in as a freshman he was just working on his game,” Wultzen said. “We knew he had the potential to be very good. Then all of a sudden he had this growth spurt, and the way he played, the way he managed the course, the way he handled himself improved drastically and he just progressed. … His future is up to him. It’s going to be fun to watch him grow now in college and see how good he can get.”
