Two area volleyball players picked up two big honors in the last couple weeks.
The University of St. Francis’ Jazzmyne Robbins (Sr., L-P) was selected to the American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Mideast Region first team. Robbins finished the season with a team-high 448 kills and also had 97 digs and 23 blocks. Her season ended prematurely as she was sidelined with an injury in late October.
St. Francis finished the season 37-9 and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament before being eliminated in pool play.
Also, Sauk Valley Community College’s Kalli Scheppers (Fr., Mendota) was named to the NJCAA Division II All-American Volleyball second team. She had a team-high 465 kills along with 290 digs, 38 blocks, 10 assists and two aces this season.
n Bowling Green State University’s Leah Shaw (Sr., Princeton) finished the year with 191 kills, 119 blocks — which was second on the team — 66 digs, 23 aces and 22 assists.
BGSU advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament after defeating Yale in five sets Nov. 30. Shaw had 10 kills, eight blocks, two digs and two aces in the win. The Falcons then had their postseason run ended with a three-set loss to No. 1-ranked Penn State Dec. 1. BGSU finished the year 22-11 overall and 13-3 in the Mid-American Conference.
The University of Wisconsin’s Ethan Armstrong (RS Jr., Ottawa) helped his team to its third straight Big Ten title and its third straight Rose Bowl berth in a 70-31 win over Nebraska Dec. 1. He had two solo and four assisted tackles.
Armstrong is currently third on the team in tackles with 89 — 51 solo and 38 assisted — with two tackles for a loss and an interception.
Judson University’s Anthony Ahlers (Sr., Putnam County) had a double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds in a 90-75 overtime loss to Holy Cross Saturday. He is averaging a team-high 11.0 points and 5.7 rebounds per game and also has 13 assists, a team-high seven blocks and six steals.
n Elmhurst College’s Taylor Baxter (Jr., Fieldcrest) scored 14 points and had four assists, one rebound, one steal and one block to help Elmhurst to its first victory of the season in an 87-70 win over Webster University Saturday. He is averaging 10.7 points and 3.8 rebounds per game and also has a team-high 21 assists to go with five steals and one block.
n Sauk Valley Community College’s Jacob Fisher (Fr., Princeton) is averaging 0.7 points per game in three games played.
Judson University’s Emily Ragsdale (Jr., Ottawa) is averaging 7.4 points and 7.2 rebounds per game this season and also has 25 assists, a team-high 13 blocks and three steals.
n Monmouth College’s Lauren Kellen (So., Mendota) helped Monmouth to a school-record eighth straight win Saturday with three points, two rebounds, two assists and a steal in a 62-45 win over Carroll University. Teammate Chelsea Gross (Sr., LaMoille) also scored two points in the win.
Kellen is averaging 4.5 points and 1.3 rebounds per game and also has seven assists and two steals in four games played. Gross is averaging 1.7 points and 1.7 rebounds per game in three games played. She also has one steal.
n Benedictine University’s Michelle Batty (So., L-P) scored eight points and had one rebound and one assist in a 77-67 win over Rockford College Saturday. She is averaging 4.1 points and 2.1 rebounds per game and is tied for the team lead in assists with 22. She also has three steals.
n St. Bonaventure University’s Kelcie Rombach (Fr., Ottawa) is averaging 1.2 points and 0.3 rebounds in six games played.
n Lake Forest College’s Lindsay Wallaert (Sr., Hall) is averaging 0.6 points and 1.1 rebounds per game this season. She also has three steals and two assists.
n Eureka College’s Kourtney Ewald (Sr., Ottawa) is averaging 1.5 rebounds and has one steal in two games.
n Illinois Wesleyan University’s Emily Considine (So., St. Bede) has three points and one rebound in one game played this season.
Indoor track and field
Illinois State University’s Kendall Rush (Sr., Hall) won the triple jump (11.76m), placed second in the long jump (5.28m), and was part of the 1,600-meter relay team that placed third (4:14.64) at the ISU Open Saturday.
Teammate Kimi Sanden (Fr., BV) was part of the relay team and also placed fifth in the 800 meters (2:24.03). ISU’s Luke Wielgopolan (Sr., Ottawa) placed fourth in the weight throw (17.21m) and 13th in the shot put (12.20m), as well.
n Northern Illinois University’s Ellen Renk (Fr., L-P) finished third in the long jump (17-4.75) and third in the triple jump (35-9.25) at the Cyclone Holiday Preview Dec. 6.
n The United States Naval Academy’s Brandon Swindler (Jr., L-P) placed fourth in the weight throw (54-1.25) at the Navy Invitational Dec. 1.
n Eastern Illinois University’s Derrick Johnson (Fr., BV) placed 11th in the mile run (4:31.13) and was part of the EIU distance medley relay team that placed second (10:38.14) at the EIU Early Bird Meet Friday.
n King College’s Tom Lamkin (So., Mendota) finished 24th in the weight throw (38-0.25) and 24th in the shot put (35-5.75) at the Appalachian Invitational Indoor Meet Nov. 30-Dec. 1.
