Holiday roundup: Peru church to serve free Thanksgiving turkey





All are welcome for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner with turkey and all the trimmings free of charge at noon Thanksgiving Day at First Congregational Church of Peru, 1431 Fourth St.

There will be a worship service in the sanctuary at 11:30 a.m. for all who wish to attend.

Churches cooperate
for Thanksgiving
United Church of Christ, Spring Valley will host a community Thanksgiving service at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the sanctuary at 223 E. Erie St. The theme of the service will be, “Thanksgiving: Brought to You by God.” The Rev. Kay Harding, interim pastor to the Zion UCC in Peru, will be the preacher.

A collection will be taken for the benefit of the Illinois Valley and Hall Township food pantries.

In addition to Spring Valley UCC and Zion, participating churches include Waltham Presbyterian Church, Trinity United Church of Christ, La Salle, Hollowayville United Church of Christ and First Congregational, La Salle.

YMCA offers
camp for kids Friday
Thanksgiving Camp will be 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 29 at the Illinois Valley Y. Children in kindergarten through fifth grade can enjoy sports, games, art activities, movies, swimming, a snack and more.

Before- and after care are available.

Parents should send a sack lunch and drink for their child and if they will swim, send a towel and suit. Register at the Illinois Valley Y, 300 Walnut Drive, Peru.

Government offices to close
Peru city department offices will be closed Thursday and Friday in observance of Thanksgiving.

Garbage pick-up will remain on the usual schedule for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, but Thursday customers’ garbage will be picked up Friday and Friday customers’ trash will be picked up Saturday. 

- Oglesby City Clerk’s Office will be closed Thursday, Nov. 28 and Friday, Nov. 29 in observance of Thanksgiving.

Thursday garbage collection will be picked up Friday. The last yard waste pickup will be Wednesday; but residents still can burn leaves 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday until Dec. 15.

-Illinois Secretary of State’s offices will be closed Thursday and Friday observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Driver services facilities that normally open Tuesday through Saturday will be open Saturday, Nov. 30.
