Tonica School autism program approved

TONICA — Tonica School Board approved a new autism program Tuesday for children ages 3-6.

Superintendent-principal John Suarez said the district saw a need when Peru discontinued its program.

“Our goal is to provide a service for our school and for other schools to come here, too,” he said.

If the board did not create a program, Tonica would have to send a student to Bloomington to receive services. That would end up costing the school an estimated $60,000.

“I think that is a very conservative number,” Suarez said. “I think it would be much higher than $60,000.”

The school already has an autism program for ages 6-9.

In other business, the reorganized board:
*Presented outgoing board president Dan Arkels with a desk clock in appreciation for his 16 years of service. Arkels did not seek re-election to the board.
* Elected board member Jeremy Hillyer school board president, Brian Marcinkus vice president and Scott Obermiller secretary.
