MENDOTA — The annual Mendota High School Symphony Concert will feature not just one guest artist for the 54th installment, but an entire symphonic band this year.

MHS band director Matt Holzner said his students will be joined in concert by the Augustana Symphonic Band at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15 in the Mendota High School auditorium.

Augustana is a private liberal arts college in Rock Island. Among the 65 students in the symphonic band is Lindsay Hohertz, a 2010 MHS graduate. She will perform along with her younger brother, Jonathon, who now plays trumpet at MHS.

The band’s director, James Lambrecht, also will direct during the Mendota concert, Holzner said.

Lambrecht has extensive experience performing and guest conducting with symphony orchestras and brass quintets throughout the Midwest.

Lambrecht studied at Indiana University before Holzner was a student there. Over the years, they have worked together professionally many times. Lambrecht also knows the Mendota program since many MHS students have been accepted into the school’s honor program.

The “Americana” theme of the symphonic concert will feature some pieces by each band separately before coming together at the end for a performance of “Battle Hymn of the Republic.”

Holzner said the concert will feature music from different periods in American history as well as different styles.

“Immediately after school (on Feb. 15), the Augie band will already be here and set up,” Holzner said. “We will rehearse together until about 3:45 p.m.”

The Augustana band will bring its music sets for the 59 MHS students to use during the concert.

The Mendota band will open the concert, and the Augustana band will take the stage after intermission. Holzner said there will be a short break as the two bands set up together for the finale.

“There’s so much energy packed into that,” he said as the students practiced a selection for the upcoming concert.

Admission is free.
