Two Mendota taverns approved for video gambling

MENDOTA — Two more businesses have the Mendota City Council’s permission to add video gambling machines.

The council approved video gaming licenses for three state-approved terminals at Main Street Station and four of the state-approved machines at The Hub. The city previously had three approved, legal gaming sites: El Zarape restaurant, and two Interstate 39 truck stops — Gromann’s and Road Ranger.

In November, the money wagered in the machines resulted in a small share — less than $400 — of revenue for the city. The General Assembly approved video gaming outside of casinos in 2012 at approved locations, and the gaming machines started showing up in the Illinois Valley in late fall.

Unsavory characters
Persistent issues including vandalism and graffiti at the skate park on former tennis courts near Lake Mendota caused Alderman Paul Norris to propose a council discussion soon about closing the skate park.

Bridge problem
The council voted 7-0 to let bids for repair of a Fourth Road bridge over a creek north of the Del Monte “farm shop.” The bridge deck needs to be redone because it is badly worn from heavy trucks, Norris said. When the city annexed land, it took in the bridge, which is in a somewhat rural area. City clerk Emily McConville said the repair estimate was about $125,000. They did not anticipate any state assistance on that route.
