Illinois Conservation Police along with local fire departments responded to a rescue call Friday for an 18-year-old woman trapped on a ledge inBuffaloRockState Park.

Riley M. Sorden, 18, of Morris and Sarah A. Lee, 18, of Braidwood were hiking in a restricted area of Buffalo Rock State Park when Lee decided to climb down to a ledge and could not get back up. The Department of Natural Resources was contacted at 1:23 p.m. and called for assistance.

Assistant chief of operations of Utica Fire Department BenBrown said the call came in to Utica Fire Department at 1:30 p.m. and that a woman had wandered off the trail in the park and become trapped.

The park is in the Naplate fire district, and the department put out a Mutual Aid Box Alarm System request to activate a technical rescue team. In addition toUticaand Naplate, firefighters fromOttawa, Grand Ridge, Streator. Mendota, Wenona andLa Salleresponded.

Two rescuers rappelled down to the woman by rope from the top of the cliff to the ledge where Lee was located. Brown said the rescue effort lasted about an hour and a half. The woman did not suffer major injuries and was not taken to a hospital.

Both Lee and Sorden were cited for being in a restricted area and destruction of natural objects in a state park, Illinois Conservation Police said.
