Waltham Schools' tax rate to decline slightly

Tom Collins
NewsTribune Senior Reporter

Waltham schools are lowering taxes. This week, the board approved a 2012 tax levy that effectively translates into a 1 cent decline in taxes. The rate falls from $3.18 to $3.17 per $100 of taxable value.

Separately, the board approved the decision of the Property Tax Appeal Board for the 2008 tax year. As per the settlement, the PTAB issued an order on Oct. 19 concerning the assessment at Senica’s Oak Ridge Golf Club. According to the ruling, Senica’s should have been assessed at $459,954 and therefore is entitled to a refund of $38,103 plus interest, to be paid from the Tax Increment Financing district.

“The school district’s refund, if any, will be minimal,” superintendent Bob Abney said. “Over the course of the next year, similar refunds will be taken from the TIF as the result of reductions under the settlement for tax years 2009, 2010 and 2011.”

Finally, the district issued its monthly “board salute” to Utica Fire Protection District for the time they spent working with the district during Fire Safety Week. Utica supplied the smoke house for student education and worked with the Waltham administration by reviewing the safety plan, among other services.
Waltham next meets at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19 at Waltham South in downtown Utica.
