County gives rural residents more time to erect 911 locator signs

OTTAWA — If you’re a rural La Salle County resident and still haven’t purchased and posted your emergency 911 address sign don’t worry, there’s still time before you are fined.

La Salle County Board members Thursday voted unanimously to extend the deadline for posting the signs until July 1.

“There are a lot of people out there waiting for signs so we came up with July 1 to give the vendors and people more time,” said board member Stephen Abel (D-Mendota), chairman of the development committee.

Six companies were assigned to produce the 18,000 signs needed but they had become overwhelmed by the orders and could not keep up with demand. As a result, board members decided it would be prudent to extend the deadline.

The road signs are designed with reflective paint that allows emergency responders to accurately and quickly identify addresses during emergencies.

Other business:
* Board members honored Morgan Cockrel-Pearlman, a seventh-grade student at Deer Park Elementary School, and Natalie-Anne Lindig, an eighth-grader at Shepherd Middle School, for their academic and extra curricular achievements.

* Board members passed a special use request filed by Deer Park School District to place a 75-foot commercial tower on its property.

* Board members passed a resolution that extends a petition filed by Iberdrola Renewables Inc. to construct a wind farm in Otter Creek Township near Streator.

* Board members approved the reappointment of emergency management agency director Connie Brooks; Allen Township Drainage District No. 1 commissioner John Jansen; Brookfield Vienna Drainage District commissioner George McComb; and Wallace Drainage District No. 2 commissioner John Lyons.
