4-H groups close year with projects to benefit their communities

NT Staff

OTTAWA — Before Christmas, youth from across La Salle County gathered for the annual 4-H Holiday Gift Workshop. Youth attending the workshops created gifts to share with family and friends this holiday season.

The county also had several 4-H clubs working on service projects this holiday season. The North Stars 4-H club participated in an aluminum recycle run. The Fox River Warriors participated in “Freezin for a Reason” and collected more than 700 pounds of food that will be donated to those in need. Dimmick Braves made pudding pies and pumpkin pies for the homeless shelter. They also decorated trees around Dimmick School to make it look more festive.

The Pouncing Panthers of Peru decorated pumpkins for the homeless shelter in Peru, donated items to the Illinois Valley Food Pantry, donated time at Hy-Vee to “fill the Mayflower” and made holiday ornaments to give to the local nursing home. The Westerners 4-H Club collected more than 250 pounds of food to donate to the food pantry. The South Prairie Pioneers made a donation to Grand Ridge Fire Department from the proceeds made from a pumpkin patch.

To join 4-H or volunteer, contact the University of Illinois Extension-La Salle County Office at (815) 433-0707 or stop by the extension office 1689 N. 31st Road, Suite 2, Ottawa. Office hours are 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, (closed from noon to 1 p.m.).

Thank you for this positive post.
Perhaps a NT reporter could be placed on permanent "positive news detail," and have a daily column of good news here, nationally, and internationally--on the front page, preferably.
Broaden the reporting for 2013 and add a new place to look FIRST, as we open the NEWS!
It would brighten many people's day!!!
