County to name first woman to finance chairman seat

OTTAWA — La Salle County Board member Arratta Znaniecki does her homework during the tedious, months-long process of preparing the county’s budget each year.
She often brings to budget preparation meetings a list of questions about proposed expenditures regardless of the number of zeroes behind them. And if there’s an expense she disagrees with, she’s never been shy about speaking up.
For these reasons and more, Znaniecki (R-Ottawa) will become the county board’s first woman to serve as finance committee chairman when the new board takes office next month.
“My only reservation is if I have the knowledge to do this,” she said Monday after county board chairman Jerry Hicks (D-Marseilles) told her the committee on appointments’ decision.
The appointment will not become official until the committee on appointments meets Wednesday to finalize board member appointments.
Despite Znaniecki’s reservation, everyone on the current finance committee gave her encouragement and openly said she was a good choice.
“Hey, if that rudder gets crooked don’t worry, there’s always plenty of people around to help you get it straight,” finance committee member Jerry Myers (R-Streator) told Znaniecki. “This committee is a shared responsibility.”
Hicks also said the new vice chairman of the board will be county board member Jim Olson (D-Seneca).
Olson will replace outgoing board member Tom Ganiere (D-Ottawa) who chose to run for state Senate instead of re-election to the county board.
“(Olson) has done a lot of good work during his time on the board and he has experience,” Hicks said.
