Keeping it local:
Mendota council aims to keep
ordinance tickets out of county court

MENDOTA — City attorney Mike Guilfoyle updated the Mendota City Council on the possibility of keeping city ordinance violation fines local.
“Cities are losing so much money because counties are getting all the revenue,” he told the aldermen during Monday night.
Illinois Municipal League has a way for offenders to pay fines locally rather than wait until after the violation has been filed in La Salle County court. The local payment would settle the violation without it being on the offender’s record. If the council adopts the proposal, it would apply to local ordinance violations only and not traffic or other offenses.
“Just so you know, we only get about $10-20 of every $100 if we go down to the county,” he said.
Alderman Justin Setchell said they are working on the ordinance and expect to present it at the next council meeting.
