A 25-year-old DePue man is hospitalized following a head-on collision on the Route 71 curves near Starved Rock on Wednesday morning.
Jonathan Johnson was a passenger in a car driven by an unnamed 16-year-old Perugirl. That car, which also was transporting another 16-year-old girl of La Salle, was eastbound near E. 950th Road when it crossed the center line and at 8:42 a.m. collided with a westbound sport-utility vehicle driven by Lynda Hernandez, 18, ofOttawa, according to state police.
Johnson was taken by Utica Ambulance to St. Elizabeth Medical Center,Ottawaand later was flown to St. Francis Medical Center,Peoria. He remained in critical condition this morning, according to a hospital spokesman inPeoria.
The 16-year-olds were taken by Oglesby ambulance toIllinois Valley Community Hospital,Peru, where they were treated and released. Hernandez refused treatment at the scene, according to police.
The driver of the car was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, driving too fast for conditions, improper lane usage, no valid driver’s license, too many passengers, unsafe tires and failure to secure a child under 19 years of age, according to police. The 16-year-old passenger was charged with failure to wear a seat belt and illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor, according to police.
