PRINCETON — Princeton Optimist Club and Bureau County Metro Center sponsored Princeton’s first pumpkin races, which were Saturday at Main and Marion streets.

Kids 18 and younger were asked to bring a minimum of three canned goods for the food pantry to participate, and adults 18 and older paid $25 for each pumpkin entered in the Pinewood Derby-style races. All registration fees will be donated to the food pantry.

Event organizer Dick Volker this morning he said 28 pumpkins were raced Saturday. They raised $75 for the food pantry and collected 208 pounds of food.
Volker said he was pleased with the turnout and participation on Saturday and plans to put it on again next year.

A chili cook-off and pie contest also took place during the races.
